Yesterday I received word and the digital proof copy that my MT-LB will be featured
in the FSM Reader Gallery of the July issue.

Upon looking at the copy, I scanned left on the page, thinking I recognize that piece
of work, and sure enough, one Mr Ken Childres has a model in there as well!

Two of us in one issue. A pretty good showing for the club.

Started on a new project this weekend. I am trying to create a more accurate M18 Hellcat by combining the Academy and AFV Club kits, since neither is correct on its own. So far I have altered the rear hull angles on the Academy kit and plan to use the lower hull from it, since the AFV Club kit is about a millimeter shorter, which means the tracks rub against the bottom of the sponsons. I filled in the electric motor mounts in the bottom of the Academy hull and the drive sprocket adjustments on the hull also. The Academy kit is made to accept an electric motor, like the old Tamiya kits. I have used the transmission from AFV Club kit on the driver's floor from Academy. I cut off the bumps on the transmission housing plates on the AFV Club upper hull and the Academy lower hull and replaced them with hex bolts.

The interior, upper hull and turret from AFV Club are all much better detailed and molded than the offerings from Academy, so I will be using them as I move on with the build. The road wheels on the AFV kit look to be more shallow than the Academy offerings , so I will be using the Academy parts for most of the running gear and suspension. I haven't made up my mind yet on whether to replace the enging deck grating with PE and add some engine compartment details. The Engine deck on the Academy kit is incorrectly shaped, in order to allow for the engine and has very poor grating. The grating on the AFV Club kit is deep and with washes will look pretty good. The only thing you can really see through the grate is the muffler on the real vehicle anyway. I will try to add some photos later.

I lost one of my uncles today. Roy O Bullock. Uncle Orville as he was known to us. He was an US Army veteran and a veteran of the Korean War. He was retired from International Paper Co at Pine Bluff.

He was also a scale modeler. He liked to do WWII airplanes. He would paint them by hand and hang them in his garage. He was the inspiration for me to get back into scale modeling. I always wished I could have showed him how an airbrush worked. It's too late now. The last time I saw him he was working on a balsa P-51 mustang.

Bri and I got back from Pensacola Sunday night. We had a great time! Drove down on Thursday. Friday we went to the Naval Air Museum then spent the afternoon on the beach and dinner at a sea side crab shack... Perfect day on the gulf coast. Saturday we went to the show hosted by the Pensacola Modeleers and Panhandle Miniature Figure Society. This was the first time they had held a combined show. There were some difficulties as one would expect, mainly with them using two different methods of judging. GSB for Figures and 1-2-3 for IPMS side. I have no doubt that they will get that worked out. There was some very very nice work there and pretty much all genres were represented. Our old buddy Jeff Hicks was there and it was great to see him again. We spoke to several vendors about the possibility of attending our Sproo Doo show as well.

Below are two links for Photobucket. One is the Naval Air Museum and the other is photos from the Model Show.
Zombie bust took a Bronze in the painters category (figure side)

Here are the 1st place winners in the Pre and Post 1945 armor
If you haven been to the PTC sessioins you are truly missing out...Have unlimited fun and share out modeling with all. First time's: New guy shows up and airbrushes for the first time ever and nails it, although he's been away from the hobby for a while he was amazed at how far the hobby has come with all the new kits, products and most of how many "Geeks" are out there...he showed up last and was the last one to leave!!! We airbrushed, rattle canned, and paint... and Mikey "D" has a contest winning finish after alot of coaching he's going to be a force to recon with. Dave had the new clear coat laid on so wet he was back to doing his Dance, this you got to see...he's got moves the late Michale Jackson would applaud...you've got to see it to belive it!!! Sorry for no pics...had too much fun to be snapping!!!

Next PTC will be in a couple Mondays, bring what on your bench and share it, you will be fascinated by the PTC fun...

JZ217 Fleet Air Arm 1945

JZ217 was involved in two famous actions. The first on 1st April 1944 when she attacked and sunk, with depth charges U355 whilst protecting Convoy JW58, although there seems to be some evidence that the destroyer HMS Beagle finish off U355 after she was damaged by JZ217.
The second major action she was involved in was the attack on the U boat base at Atkilbotn on May 4th 1945. It is believed that she damaged a U boat and sunk a U boat tender. However on her exit from the target area she was engaged by enemy heavy AA fire, she succumbed to writhing fire and crashed at Harstad killing the three crew members. The crews remains were buried in the grounds of the local church.

When I started this build I believed that JZ217 was a Tarpon Mk1 but research revealed she was an Avenger Mk 1B BuNo 47939

This is not one of my better builds, trouble with the paint (Xtracrylic) and some basic modelling mistakes.

FUN, Fun FunX(, The Tulsa Show was another great success for the local Tulsa OK Modelers... Tulsa has some exceptional modlers to cover the spectrum of modeling, the Jr. modelers are some of the best I've seen in a while... not much "X-Box/Wii going on up in Tulsa, they'd give you a run for your money if they entered in the "old modelers" catagory, very impressive builds. Arkie modelers attending. Bob, Ken Leslie, and Mac... we had a blast, had the sample meal for $13.00 and took food home!!! Lunch at "On the Border was filling, I found gas for $3.47 a gal, met some new faces and caught up with some long time friends. Your Arkie Modelers showed their mdeling talents by capturing Best of in ships, automotive and aircraft...specifics to follow. We toured the local Hobby Shop and I was amazed to see a mom-n-pop/brick-n-motor shop still serving us model geeks, great deals to be had there!!! As with any and most of my trecks using GPS (Google Maps) you will end up on the other side of town and not where you need to be so leave som time to "re-route"... I made it in time!!! If the USAF used GPS guided weapons they'd take out a porta jon and the model show would be safe, go ta love tech!!! I attepmted to take pics of all the entries but got pulled to the side to yap!!! Expect to see new faces at the April show and Spru-Doo...I put the word out!!!>:D< Lots of Figures, Cars, Cars, Cars, Sci-Fi, Ships, Wings and a little Armor. The level of modeling was very impresive, judging was ok but then again they got mad skillz in Tulsa, very impressive and the locations was in a BMW car care center, it was so clean that you'd never know you were in a service facility... clean is an understatement, you could eat off the floor while looking up into a vintage BMW!!! Pics to follow...

Here are two versions of the 2012 show flyer. You can save and print them from here or follow the link at the bottom for a little better quality examples.
Notice there is a QR bar code at the bottom right corner or each. For those of you not familiar with these, they are used quite a bit in marketing these days. Anyone with a smart phone can download a free app that will read these codes. A quick scan with the phone's camera and it will take you right to the website, no stopping to type anything... It can even be scanned from your computer screen. Pretty slick eh!

I got this posting by Dick Montgomery from the IPMS USA FB page and thought a few of you guys might find it interesting. If you don't recognize the name of the model company here they are the folks that cranked out the amazing 1/32 Skyraider and are currently working on a Mustang that I have a feeling is gonna make the Tamiya offering look like a 21st Century toy.
I "follow" IPMS on Twitter (ipmsusa) and I just saw that, according to Scale Aircraft Modeling magazine, Zoukei Mura will release a 32nd scale He-219 and a 48th scale J7W1 Shinden. If memory serves, Hase released a 48th Shinden some years ago, but a ZM offering would be welcomed. And, of course, a 32nd He-219 would be most welcomed! I had the opportunity to meet several staffers for ZM, as well as their CEO, and these guys are a class act.
