It's been a while since I've messed around with Hasegawa plastics so... "I thought why not a Hellcat." The kit was a gift from Mr. Dave Carter, packed with all kinds of aftermarket goodies. True to the quality engineering we have come to expect from Hasegawa this kit is no exception. After nipping a few of the main parts like the fuselage, wings, stabilizers) from the sprus then cleaning up the spru nubs, mold seams and ejector pin marks...it was time to dry fit. The wing to fuselage join on this kit is positive, top to bottom and forward and aft, leaving no gaps needing filler.

F6F is taking shape and looking the part with parts cleaned up, resin washed, primed and fitted/mocked up. The parts alignment and fit are impressive... The engineering again is a plus for this kit, the wing to fuselage join at the rear/underside have the join corresponding to the panel line as part of the join...I'm sure I confused a few of ya!!! Just take a look at the #4 mock-up picture...thumbs down

This might be a double post, the first one didn't work so here gose... Cockpit painted then gloss coated with Future let everything dry 24hr's in prep for MiG's dark wash, some pastles/pigments, a filter, some dry brushing, some more wash and detail painting...such a small area getting alot of work only to be closed up and hidden. Oh well it's a great place to practice and hide any mistakes...Ha, Ha!!!

I wanted this cockpit to look well used dirty so I went to town with my MiG wash...not totally done, got to add a filter coat of thinned Tamiya smoke and clear yellow to blend it all in. So here's what a little little paint, some wash, and decaling done on the cockpit and motor slapped on the resin and plastic did. I’m currently undecided on adding plug/ignition wires at this point. Even in this scale it would look like a birds nest in there, but then again "it would feed the pen light geeks."eye popping smiley Man all of this and it will all disappear, like that oxygen bottle on armor plate behind the seat...but I know it there!!!

Looking good Mac...Like the detail of the cockpit and the engine.I thank the engine would look good wired..

It’s been over a year since I’ve shown this build some love…with some work bench clearing motivation this build has been given new life and a push to complete it this month, also with a couple of Tamiya 1:48 Fw-190’s… The kit was primed with Mr. Surfacer 1000, wings, fuselage and tail plane pre-shaded with Model Master flat black. The underside was pre shaded with Model Master dark earth. The wing tip navigations lights were molded on but looking at reference pic's they were clear with red and green lights. They were cut out and replaced with clear spru from the kit clear parts. The clear spru was rough cut to approximate size, shaped and the bulbs micro drilled and filed with Tamiya red and green paints, glued in place and further shaped then sanded and polished…

Glad to see that you have resumed work on this little cat. I have built this kit and it is really sweet! By the way, I wired that engine and found that it turned out as you suggested: mainly unseen and a little like a bird's nest. When I showed it, I usually had to point the wiring out to people because it was so hard to see. I am sure you would do a better job than I did however it adds very little to the finished product!

Tom, I feel ya on the plug wires...even with w pen light you'd be hard pressed to see em, bringing an "electron microscope" to a model show might be a little extreme but you'd see plug wires!!!

A few progress pix with the build ready for decaling and an oil wash, MiG!!! But with the kit decals yellowing, the wait for aftermarket replacements begins. The remaining masking on control surfaces will remain until after the flat coat has been applied, masking and leaving them on will create a slight variation in the color. The affect will be subtle as these areas were covered with fabric and would fade quicker than the metal surfaces.

Trying something new…painted on exhaust stain/streaks. Progress over the weekend was more or less a first time use of Tamiya Smoke for base color of exhaust staining; heavily thinned with Mr. Leveling thinner at 90:10 and sprayed at 10psi. I‘ve used this mixture/psi technique before as a filter to blend in camouflage demarcations with success with convincing results. Multiple applications will darken between coats so care and close observation need to be kept in mind, the will dry darker so keep that in mind when using Tamiya Smoke!!! The plan is to finish off the exhaust stain/streaks after the decals arrive and a applied, with some grey and brown pastel powders to further enhance the exhaust stain/streak. More Shades of Grey work applied to the gun access panels on the upper wings...these pens are the shizz-nizz, get some!!! the finger smiley

** A close look at the wings will show the subtle pre-shading of center of panels picked out around the gun access on the upper wings to represent paint fading and general ware & tare from the armors. I chose this method vs. the lightning of the base color or post shading because it looks a bit more realistic and natural…take a look at the process in the preceding post above...fun stuff kidos!!!hot smiley

Trying to stay focused on task at hand while waiting for the UPS Man to deliver decals for this build...I decided to go forward and put down my initial panel line wash, and weathering using MiG's dark wash. The MiG dark wash is a dark brown wash which works well with this camo, most will opt for a black wash which I feel is way to stark... The MiG wash also lends itself to staining and blending into the areas around the panel lines adding to the weathering of the paint. I applied it heavy in the dark blue areas and thinned it out for the intermediate blue and white underside; let it set up over night and "marinade..." I removed the masking from the control surfaces to check for and clean up any wash that may have seeped under the mask, Tamiya tape works great but the was is oil based and will degrade the tapes adhesion in time. The areas will get fresh tape in order to keep the lighter shade of the faded fabric, next will be another coat of Future to seal the wash and provide a clean surface for the decals...

Weathering/Chipping… Looking at reference pic’s on the WWW, I’ve decided to add some subtle ware and tare on the Hellcat using Tamiya’s weathering powders for the exhaust stains, Tamiya’s XF-4 “yellow green” and Citadels’ “chain mail.” the paint work was done and allowed to set up overnight and then sanded with Micro Mesh polising pads... more work in store for the exhaust stains are planned when satisfied the chipping will be toned down a bit after some decaling, UPS Man delivered the goods today…having some fun now!!!

With decals in hand and decaling in-progress I pause for a small update. The decals are by Super Scale International/Squadron Products, printed by Cartograf of Italy… and all I can say is WOW!!! I’ve used Super Scale decals in the past but it’s been a while but these decals are super thin and the register is spot on. They settle down with just the Micro Scale setting solution, so far no need for the Micro Sol…Thanx Super Scale for having Cartograf print your decals!!!
