_CASM Executive Board Meeting Minutes
Date: 9/4/11
Members present: Ken Childres, Tom Brown, Brianna Childres, David Stilwell
Absent: David Wassell, Joshua Swift
The meeting was called to order by President Ken Childres at 11:00 A.M.
Modeler of the Year:
The Modeler of the Year award will be presented during the September meeting. The winner of the award will receive a very nice plaque and the different reasons that the person was nominated will be presented. This is a very special honor in our club and we want to provide all of the recognition they are due.
Sproo-Doo Contest is One Month Away!
Time will be spent during the meeting to line-up volunteers needed for the upcoming contest. If members have donations they would like to make for the raffle, they should bring them to the meeting. Volunteers are needed for setting up the contest and there will be a judges meeting directly following the club meeting to review the forms and judging criteria. Many other details will be presented by Brianna.
Community Outreach:
We are interested in developing community outreach programs to facilitate the expansion of the modeling hobby. We are asking for club members to volunteer in coordinating outreach to children, veterans, college art students, and the broader modeling community. There are many people who model that we do not presently have any contact but with whom would like to make contact. Club members endorsed items on the Club Questionnaire indicating an interest in reaching out to the modeling community to expand the modeling hobby. We discussed the following future outreach areas:
Kid’s Program: We developed a conceptual model for a kid’s program and are looking for a current club member who is a parent and would be willing to develop the program. We would like to develop a program that is similar to other youth organizations where parents and/or grandparents and their children/ grandchildren or other family members model together as part of CASM. Parents/ grandparents/family Members and their children would meet once a month to build models together and then bring the models to the CASM meeting for presentation during show-n-tell. The program would start by reaching out to children who purchase models at Hobbytown USA and then expand as the program develops to other hobby shops, if they desire to participate in the program. A contest would be held where the only entrants would be children. Part of the joining fee would cover dues to CASM and a club T-Shirt that identifies the member as a member of the CASM and a participant in the Youth program. If there is any current club member with small children who has an interest in developing this kind of a program, please contact Tom Brown at [email protected] or talk with me at the meeting. To assist in the development of the children’s program we will develop a questionnaire asking club members how they became interested in modeling and how they started building models to help steer us in a direction that will capture the hearts and minds of the youth who may be interested.
Military Outreach: Current Service Members and Vets: We are interested in working through the VA system and the AFB in Jacksonville to include veterans in the modeling community. A lot of ideas were thrown around, without decisions being made, that include military discounts and meetings at the Jacksonville AFB. If there is a club member who has ideas on how to develop this outreach and would like to develop an outreach to members of the military, please contact Ken Childres.
College Students: We have contacts with people who are currently enrolled in several colleges and are art majors or have an interest in modeling. We are interested in contacting those people to develop an outreach to college students who either are unaware of modeling as a hobby or have an interest in modeling but are unaware that CASM exists. We believe that college students majoring in art may have a natural interest in figure painting and may be interested in using their talent in that genre of modeling. Some of the best figure modelers in the world have art degrees.
General Community Outreach: We would like to establish a relationship with people in the local library system to develop a rotating exhibit that introduces modeling as a hobby at the local libraries. In addition, we would like to encourage our club members to become more prolific in writing modeling articles for publication in modeling magazines and WIP pieces for the Club Forum.
Model Seminar:Steve Wilson will be presenting at the club meeting a demonstration/seminar on how to write modeling articles. Steve is an accomplished writer and has published numerous articles on modeling. While we recognize that this topic is not a direct “how to” demonstration, we believe that it is vital to our growth as a club and reaching out to the modeling community. I, for one, am very interested in what Steve has to say.
Scratching Post:We need articles from members for the Scratching Post. It is hoped that we will have members inspired by Steve’s presentation who put together some articles for the Scratching Post.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:45 P.M.

Trophy Packages
Our model contest is fast approaching! Please sell more trophy sponsorships and contact venders.
CASM Website and Forum
Please visit and make comments or post posts on the CASM Forum. The club survey found that a large number of club members desired more opportunities for fellowship with other club members. The club Forum is a method to meet with fellow club members between club meetings and have that fellowship that was desired. If you feel uncomfortable posting pictures of completed models or WIPs then please leave comments and questions for those who have posted. We currently average seven (7) people on the forum each day. This is a small fraction of the number of people who come to meetings. If you frequent other websites and forums, please push visiting the club website and Forum.
The next set of demonstrations at the club meeting will include how to take pictures of models (today), how to write about models (next two meetings), and how to post what you have written on the site (three meetings from now). If you have any specific questions about the site or the forum, please contact Brianna Childres and she will be happy to answer your questions.
“Model the Movies”
Our next group build will be building a model that has been in the movies or on television and will be held at the November meeting.
December Meeting Date Change
There is a conflict at our meeting spot for December. We need to start thinking about an alternative date for the meeting. Ron Leker suggested the first Saturday in December instead of the second, as it currently stands.
Plaques and Awards for the Contest
The acrylic specialty trophies and the medals were on display at the meeting. They are absolutely gorgeous and real first class workmanship. Joshua Swift announced that the acrylic trophies were donated to the club for the Contest by an anonymous donor. Thank-you!
R/C Demonstration
Ron Leker and Matthew from Hobbytown USA demonstrated a Monogram Huey helicopter that had been converted into an RC model. Matthew flew the model around the room and Ron had built and finished the model. The R/C modelers are becoming increasingly interested in making their vehicles more accurate to the real vehicle and R/C equipment has become small and light enough to be placed in plastic models.
Modeler of the Year Voting
The club attendees voted for one of the following nominees for CASM Modeler of the Year: Brianna Childres, Joshua Swift, Daris Long, Ron Leker, and Lloyd King. A heartfelt congratulation goes out to all of the nominees. You have all distinguished yourselves in your contributions to the club and the modeling industry as a whole! The results of the vote will be announced at the next meeting and the recipient will receive a nice trophy!
Price Alert
Ron Leker reported that the prices of model kits are on the rise and that some kits may rise in price by over 100%. Hobbytown USA has started an order and a layaway plan. When you order a model, the price that at the time you ordered the model will be locked regardless of the price at the time of delivery. If the ordering price is lower than the delivery price, they will sell you the model at the lower price. They have also started a lay away plan where 25% down on the model holds it for 60 days for you to pay it off. If you are unable to pay it off in 60 days then other arrangements can be made.
