The meeting was called to order by President Ken Childres at 10:00 A.M.
Announcements:
Upcoming Shows: February 19, IPMS Region 6 Convention, Live Oak, TX; March 19, MCMA Showdown Car Show, Farmers Branch, TX; March 26, Great South Tiger Fest, Kenner, LA; March 26, Tulsa Modelers Forum Car Show, Tulsa, OK; March 26, Smokey Mountain Mini Com, Knoxville, TN.
Gary Johnson Update: Ken Childres spoke with Gary’s daughter and she reported his health has taken an upturn. He has moved into an Assisted Living apartment and is getting around very well. He still is having problems with his eyesight but otherwise, he is doing better than what was expected. The list of his models needs to be typed. The delay is due to a number of boxes that were marked “Missing Pieces” that were not originally noted on the inventory. So, a record of which models are missing parts needs to be made. A lot of the boxes also include resin and photoetch parts for the enclosed model.
Jimmie Lockett: It is with profound regret that we have to report the passing of Jimmie. His funeral was held last Monday and there was a large turnout. Ken Childres and Daris Long participated as pall bearers at the funeral. The service was a “typical” Jimmie affair where modeling was mentioned often and a lot of smiles accompanied the anecdotes shared from Jimmie’s life. A suggestion was made that a Special Youth Award be sponsored by the Club at the upcoming National Convention in Omaha. Ken Childres is going to talk with the Nationals Convention Committee to determine the cost and what all is involved in adding to their awards packages. A motion was made, seconded by Lloyd King, and approved with an unanimous vote that the Jimmie Lockett Youth Award be awarded at the next CASM Model Contest and be an ongoing award at future contests. We will all really miss Jimmie. He was a fine gentleman, always brought a smile to your face, influenced many in the modeling community, and had a deep love in his heart for helping youth become interested in modeling. I am turning my hat backwards in your honor Jimmie.
Trophy Packages: The financial life and blood of the next CASM Model show is based on the selling of Trophy Packages to sponsors of the show. Packages cost $50.00 and the sponsor’s name will be publicly posted to advertise each sponsor. Sponsorships come from club members soliciting people from different businesses. Please take the time from your busy schedules to collect sponsorships. A majority of the cost of the show occurs now so the sooner you can obtain sponsorships, the better it will be for the club.
Pulaski Tech Model Classes: Monday, 2/14/11, at 6:00 PM., in room 305 is the next PTC Modeling Class. Tom Brown will be presenting his second class on figure model building. He will be discussing the selection of color to build harmony in the finished model, the relationship between colors, color theory, and using color to create contrast in the finished modeling piece. Tom issues a warning to all attendees: This is Valentines Day evening so carefully consider whether you should pay attention to your honey or attend a riveting class on the use of color!
Report on Children Outreach: Ron Leker shared with the group a recent outing to Clarksville where Ron, Lloyd King, and Josh Swift joined Bob Hiatt in providing a class to children on making models. There were approximately 20 children who attended and Bob is setting up a regular class time to work with the kids. Ron and Josh are also presenting classes between 1:30 and 3:30 at Hobbytown USA, Little Rock, following the club meeting to teach children how to build models. There were approximately six children at the last class and Ron welcomed any volunteers from the club to attend the class. The class mainly consists of sitting down, 1:1, with children and assisting them assemble a Snaptite kit.
USS Lexington Report: Lloyd King presented an update on building models for the U.S.S. Lexington Museum. The club is two models shy of being considered a “Cornerstone” club for the museum. A Cornerstone Club will have their name publicly displayed as such in the model display section of the museum. Lloyd has been given approximately 30 more models to build and would welcome any volunteers to build the models. The next model he builds will be in commemoration of Jimmie Lockett. The USS Lexington Museum will be sending two representatives to select and award Special plaques at the next CASM Contest. One plaque will be awarded to an aircraft model and the other to a ship model.
Website Update: There have been new features added to the Website so please check it out. Pictures from Show-n-tell at club meetings are posted and, starting with this one, technique demonstrations presented during the club meetings will be available. Brianna Childres would like to incorporate additional ideas from the club members to the site. Please contact Josh Swift with any ideas you might have for additions and he will forward them to Brianna.
Hobbytown Display Case: Ron Leker reported that he would like to have a model from each of the club members so that he can change out the model display at Hobbytown USA. He would like each member to bring in a completed model at the next club meeting so that the display can be updated. The name of the modeler will be placed on a display card next to their model in the display. He also plans on making a banner over the display cases that identifies that the models have come from CASM members.
Gift Card Winners: Tom Brown: $5.00; Richard Bosbey: $10.00; Brianna Childres: $15.00
Show-N-Tell
Rick Knapp: Rick presented his almost completed Korean War Sherman and base.
Ken Fausett: Ken presented a WIP for the Made in the USA group build: a ’49 Mercury with a ‘5o Buick nose and a Revell ’31 Willy.
Ken Childres: Ken presented a WIP of the DML D-Day Normandy Invasion Sherman M4 which will be his entry for the Made in the USA group build and his completed Croatian M-47 for the Pete Harwell Memorial Build.
Ray Smith: Ray Smith presented an assortment of Paper models that included a 1/144 scale HH3; 1/144 scale KI 61; 1/50- 1/48 scale oxygen cart, and a really, really small Rommel Rod.
William Cardwell: William presented a completed Dragon Panzer 4 and a really sad story that ended with him sitting on a WIP Stryker. Really Sad!
Ron Leker: Ron presented a DML T80U that had a real lousy turret. So he is kitbashing and building a futuristic turret with plans on backlighting the instrument panels with LEDs inside of the opened turret. The new turret is complete with two very large scratch built guns, demonstrating that size really does matter.
Daris Long: Daris presented a Snaptite ’70 Chevelle that he completed as part of a group build at PTC; an Academy M551 Sheridan; an Academy M113A1 Cavalry Truck both of which he plans to place in a diorama.
John Williams: John presented his stock ’70 Chevelle and a highly modified ’70 Chevelle for the Pulaski Tech group build and a 38 Ford Pick-up that was a WIP.
Modeling Technique Demonstration
Lloyd King demonstrated how to use Pro-Modeler Washes. It was a great demonstration and I learned a lot. Thanks Lloyd! The demonstration may be viewed on the Club Website.
Business Meeting
Contest Committee Update
A flyer that describes the CASM Contest was presented to the club members and has been submitted to IPMS so that the contest can be placed on the IPMS calendar. It was suggested that a second flyer be made that includes the different model classes at the contest and a direct link to the contest web location be added. A ¼ page add for the IPMS Journal needs to be developed and a month for its placement decided.
Business Cards/ Welcome Brochures/ Contact Card
Ken Childres is designing simple Business Cards so that when we meet other modelers we can hand them the card that has our name, meeting times, and meeting dates. A “Welcome Brochure” is also being made that will be a tri-fold brochure describing what the club is about and different activities associated with the club. Contact Cards are also being developed so that people interested in the club can leave their name and contact information at the local hobby shops so club members may make later contact. The business cards, brochures, and contact cards will be provided to the local hobby shops so that they can provide patrons information about the club.
Membership Cards
New membership cards have been designed by Josh Swift and he has taken them to a printer, who printed them as a donation to the club. The cards will be available to club members at the next club meeting for disbursement to club members.
Hobby Shop Outreach
We desire to reach out to all of the hobby shops in the area to let them know of our existence and to develop a positive relationship between them and the club. At the next meeting we will be developing a schedule of visitation to the shops to start this process.
Honor Plaque
Daris Long has designed a very nice plaque to honor club members who are deceased. He has asked that club members send him a list of the names of all of our deceased club members. The plaque will be hung at the club meeting place.
Modeler of the Year Plaque
Daris Long is also making a Modeler of the Year plaque. The Modeler of the Year award was started three years ago and past recipients included Rick Knapp, Jimmie Lockett, and Steve Wilson. Daris wanted to make sure he had all of the correct names so if there are any members whose names have been left out, please contact him. The plaque will be hung at our local meeting place.
