CASM Executive Board Minutes - January 2013
Date: 2-2-13
Members present: Brent Bristow, Tom Brown, Brianna Childres, Ken Childres
Absent: Rick Knapp, Ray Smith, David Wassell
The meeting was called to order by President Ken Childres at 3:00 p.m.
2013 Sproo-Doo: At the next regular CASM meeting, we will discuss the theme for this year’s show. It was also discussed that more adjudicator training would be provided, particularly for head judges for each category. Vendors are going to be needed, as we have lost two of our regulars. There were also suggestions for activities during the show, including an Iron Modelers event, and Lectures/Demos. Ken also told us that there had been complaints that the signs directing traffic to the show was not large enough, so he will be looking for volunteers to help make larger signs.
Dues: Several members have not paid dues for 2013. Brent will turn in the list of currently paid members to Roger for the HobbyTown discount. Other names will be added as their dues are paid.
IPMS Membership: The list of currently paid IPMS members needs to be updated, and we need to encourage membership in this group to support the growth of the hobby.
Interest Survey: The results of the Interest Survey were discussed in detail. (Details of the survey results are posted on the Forum.) The responses indicated that the majority of club members want to primarily focus on models and techniques during meetings, with Demos and Show-N-Tell ranking highest. The comments supported this.
CASM Meetings: After reviewing the Interest Survey, it was suggested by Brent that we find a way to get announcements to members more quickly so that there is more time for Demos/Show-N-Tell. Ideas included sending an email and/or printing out a list of announcements that do not require discussion, and setting up a car pool for upcoming shows.
HobbyTown Workdays: While the work days didn’t place high on the list, Ken suggested that we use those days to pair up novice modelers with more experienced modelers to help them develop technique.
AMPS: There is still an interest in getting a dual charter with AMPS. Ken will follow up on this.
Group Builds: Ideas for improving participation in the Groups Builds was discussed. Suggestions included common builds, more general themes (as we currently have), and using it to trade out the pieces in the HobbyTown display cases. These ideas will be discussed further during a regular CASM meeting.
By-Law Revision: Since there was not a quorum of voting Executive Board members, it was decided to table the discussion.
CASM Banner: Roger has given Ken the specifications for a banner to hang in HobbyTown. Bri told us that we will be able to get 2-3 banners inexpensively, so we will have extras to hang at club events and any other places that may attract modelers.
IMPS “of the Year” Awards: The deadline to apply for the club, website, and newsletter of the year is April 15. CASM will be applying for all three awards for 2013.
Scratching Post: Newsletter editor Tom Brown shared with us which articles, videos, and features get the most hits and comments on the website. He suggested that we develop a smartphone app that takes a user directly to the CASM website/Scratching Post, which Ken indicated shouldn’t be difficult. Tom felt that treating the Scratching Post as a newsletter to the modeling community throughout the country rather than just club news to our members has brought a large amount of traffic to our site.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
