USS Lexington Museum Scale Model Exhibit
Dear CASM Members and fellow modelers:
The USS Lexington Museum, a non-profit National Historic Landmark located in Corpus Christi, TX, is pleased to inform you of the continuing development of what will be one of the finest scale model aircraft and warship exhibits in the nation. When opened, the exhibit will showcase 350+ exceptional scale models crafted by talented IPMS members and independent modelers. Comprised of military aircraft and warships of all nations and service branches from 1940 to the present day, this extensive educational exhibit makes available a wide range of subjects to prospective contributors. Presently twenty months in development, the project is expected to take at least three years to complete. Our current inventory includes over 200 outstanding pieces and continues its steady growth toward our goal with each passing month. Remember, over 309,000 paid visitors toured the Lexington last year! This is a unique opportunity to see some of your best work permanently displayed and maintained in one of the nation’s foremost military museums.
In an effort to locate and procure the finest available exhibit pieces, I’ve been participating in IPMS Region 6 contests over the past two years as official representative of the Museum’s Scale Model Exhibit. My primary task has been soliciting talented modelers to help build this historic project with donations of their finest work and second, to recognize exceptionally skilled builders by awarding the Museum’s distinguished “Exemplary Craftsmanship Award”. Being onsite at these events, I’ve been able to complete all necessary donation documentation and paperwork on the spot and personally provide safe transport for scores of models directly from shows to the Museum. This service helps overcome the basic stumbling block that all modelers experience when they consider donating their prized work, “How do I get my model to the Museum safely?
The Museum offers incentives to IPMS Chapters and individuals who choose to take a larger role in helping to build the exhibit. Chapters whose members donate a minimum of ten acceptable models, total, will be recognized as “Cornerstone Chapters” both on our website and on a Distinguished Contributors plaque that will be permanently displayed in the finished exhibit. Individual builders who donate ten or more acceptable models will likewise be honored, as individuals, on the Plaque. Please be advised that “kit only” donations will not count toward Cornerstone or Distinguished recognition.
If you are interested in donating some of your finest work to this worthy educational project, please contact Lloyd King at (870) 917-8907 as soon as possible to begin the donation process. I am pleased to announce his recent appointment as the Exhibit’s official Appraiser for Prospective Exhibits for the State of Arkansas. Lloyd is uniquely qualified to inspect your prospective gift and forward his findings to the Project Coordinator for further consideration. Although we still have some distance to go to complete the collection, please don’t put off your donation(s) as many popular aircraft and ship slots have already been filled. Once your model has earned a spot in our inventory, no additional examples of that aircraft variant or class of ships will be accepted.
I’m looking forward to visiting with the CASM membership in person at this year’s Sproo-Doo in October and presenting two talented modelers with the Museum’s distinguished “Exemplary Craftsmanship” award. In the meantime, visit us online at www.usslexington.com and click on the Scale Models link on the right side of our homepage.
All the best, and keep on modeling,
Randy Barnes (IPMS 34398)
